Captain Comics

Captain Comics

Address: 710 Vista Ave, Boise, ID 83705
Website: http://captain-comics.com/

I'm going to be as objecive as possible in this review. That being said, this is my favorite comic store of all time. How's that for objectivity?

Captain Comics is located just on the outskirts of downtown Boise. The shop has basically everything you could ask for as a comics fan. They have new issues from almost every publisher, a well stocked Trade Paperback Selection, as well as an entire upstairs dedicated to back issues. I filled many a hole in my collection by using that room. Additionally they have tons of games (magic, heroclix) and Superhero apparel. They do have some higher priced back issues as well. Last time I saw the majority of them where Spiderman, but there was some Daredevil and Avengers as well.

The staff is incredibly friendly and will go to great lengths to help you find/order whatever you are looking for. I could/have spend/spent hours in the store just talking comics with the owner (corbit) or any of the employees there. One point, if you are going to Captain Comics to sell a collection make sure you are aware of what your books are worth and do some research about what they are selling for. I've seen many people come in and get upset about not getting "enough" for their books. Remember the most money you are going to get is if you actually sell them on your own using Ebay or Craigslist or something.

If you are in Boise there is no reason NOT to visit Captain Comics. It's just a few miles away from the Airport and off of the interstate.

Relaunch?

Over the next week or so I'll have some more reviews up for you guys. The leave of absence was needed but now I'm refreshed and have plenty of new shops to review. Since moving to the Southern portion of America from Hawaii I've had chances to visit quite a few new shops and the majority have been most excellent. I've been putting off doing the Captain Comics review for  too long so that will be the next one up!

Hope you enjoy and if there are any shops I should know about please let me know!

Gecko Book and Comics

Address: 1151 12th Avenue  Honolulu, HI

Having lived in Hawaii for about the past 2 years I've made it around to every shop on the island EXCEPT for Gecko Books and Comics. Why? Eh, it wasn't as close as the other stores and I thought that I had already found the best store on the Island.

If only I could go back in time and slap my past self for not coming here sooner.

Gecko's is the BEST comic store on Oahu and one of the finer stores I have been in period. It's in a very scenic and busy area of Honolulu off of 12th near the south east side of the island (you reach Makapuu, you've gone too far). Parking can be a bit of a beast, but there is a paid lot just up street near Center which only costs .75 an hour. From there, you're only looking at a couple block walk.

The store is an absolute treasure trove of comics. Ample new issues, INCREDIBLE Trade Paperback collection. I can't express how excellent the Trade Paperback selection is. Current stuff, tons of essentials, and Trades divided by AUTHOR (which I've never seen before).

The only downside of the store is the lack of back issues. They do have some cool issues (first appearance of Galactus, Punisher, etc etc) but they do not have lines of comic boxes with older issues. So this isn't the place to go to fill holes in your collection.

Aside from Super Hero stuff, the store has quite a variety of indie Graphic Novels and Trades. Additionally there are is a good selection of Anime' and a slightly smaller area for paperback novels (gross, no pictures!).

Toys, Statues, Magic, and other collectibles are all over the place at Geckos. I've been here twice now and I'm still finding new stuff.

If you visit Hawaii, please, please, please, please go visit Geckos. You'll find something worthy to read on the beaches.

Cosmic Comics and Collectibles

Address:  3814 Union Deposit Rd, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Cosmic Comics is in a decent area of Harrisburg. Especially if you are traveling into town Cosmic is located very close to a lot of the major hotels in the area. Makes comic buying easy. The store has a high quality selection of newer issues along with the last few months issues on the walls around the perimeter of the building. The store also has one of the stronger variant cover selections that I've seen as well.

The store has two gems that you need to see to appreciate. First they have a massive amount of classic toys including OG Star Wars toys (including the FALCON) along with older Marvel Legends (Silver Surfer, Gambit are a few). The second gem is the insane amount of Silver Age and early Modern back issues. The back issues bins are overflowing with older stuff at a fair price O_O. Looking through the bins I'd love to have.

If you find your way to Harrisburg do yourself a favor and swing by Cosmic Comics.
